The artist worked with pigment variations to achieve the effect of this piece, done entirely in various shades of blue. The whale in the painting encountered a world filled with pollution upon breaking the surface, and subsequently dove back down as deeply as possible to escape. Originally entitled ‘What is Blue’, the piece is part of a three-part series (including ‘What is Red’ and ‘What is Purple’).
